Fellow members,

We hope you are having a wonderful summer! This is intended to be TCA’s first monthly newsletter. Each month we will keep you up to date in what is going on in TCA land from upcoming events to new programs and everything in-between.

πŸ† 91th Southwest Open

TCA’s premier event, the 91th Southwest Open, will be held in McAllen over Labor Day weekend. Decades ago, the Southwest Open was the first chess tournament in the United States to use the Swiss system. We will continue this legacy of innovation this year by introducing points-based prizes for most sections, creating new side events (like the Texas Freestyle Championship and Texas Bullet Championship), offering five rating-based sections and empowering schools, colleges, clubs, families and companies to compete as teams. And on top of all that, the norm-eligible International section features $5,800 in guaranteed prizes and 120 grand prix points. This is an epic championship experience you do not want to miss.

πŸ“… Upcoming Events

If that is not enough, however, we have several other upcoming state championship events too:

All of these exciting tournaments have one thing in common: Strong performances can put you on track towards earning a Texas Master title in our new Texas titles system.

🌟 TCA Awards

We recently launched TCA’s first ever awards program to recognize deserving chess players, tournament directors, organizers, chess coaches and volunteers in the Texas chess community. The Recognitions Committee is seeking nominations from TCA members. Nominations are due by July 15. Learn more about this program and submit nominations here.

πŸ“ Bylaws Revision

The Bylaws Committee is preparing a comprehensive revision of the Bylaws to be presented at the annual membership meeting, which will be held at 7:30pm on August 30 at the Southwest Open. We would greatly appreciate your input in this process. You can provide feedback using this survey.

🀝 Join Our Committees

TCA needs more volunteers to serve on its committees. If you would like to join our work of growing Texas chess, fill out the volunteer form today.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve you all as your elected officers. If there is ever anything we can do to help, feel free to reach out!

Sincerely,

The TCA Leadership Team
